Atlantis (and Lost Realms Realms) FAQ - Very Preliminary

Perhaps one of the most popular myths is that of Atlantis, a once mighty civilization that was destroyed overnight by a tremendous cataclysm.

Atlantis first turned up in the writings of the greek philosopher Plato over 2000 years ago. In about 350 bc, Plato wrote in his Dialogues the basics of the Atlantis story. Firstly, in the dialogue Timeas, supposedly between Socrates and 3 students, it was explained that Atlantis existed in ancient times, some 9000 years before him , and was situated on a great island, beyond the "Pillars of Hercules". Atlantis was a great power, and unconquered militarily (although it seems to have fought with the Athenians), but vanished below the sea in a day and a night.

In another dialogue, Critias (which was unfinished), Plato goes into more detail about Atlantis, about the government, the general layout of the city/country, the religion, and why it was destroyed, but stops in the middle.

Lemuria - a lost continent in the Pacific, orginally proposed to explain the existance of Lemus in South America and Madagascar.

Mu - a lost continent someplace, the name MU was derived from the fact that the begining 2 glyphs of a Mayan codex looked like an M and a U.

Lyonesse - Region between Cornwall and the Scilly Islands which was puported dry and full of towns until the 5th century AD, where it was destroyed in a massive flood.

Ys - Legendary city off the coast of Brittany (region of France) that was flooded when the royal princess opened the floodgates (why, I forget, but it involves her being mad at her father, I think)
